About Us

The Burke Area Farmers Market is dedicated to bringing fresh food and locally-crafted goods to our community. Our team of volunteers put their heart into making sure each week is something special.

Our mission is to grow healthy food, families, and communities

Founded in 2012, the Burke Area Farmers Market has always been a place to increase access to fresh food.

In our original location on Burke Main Street, we recognized the many challenges ahead. 2012 was a drought year, and we weren't quite sure if folks would grow and sell garden produce — a farmers market was a new idea to our area. There are state regulations that, while necessary, can be frustrating. And people in and around Burke be responsive to this new concept?

But we had a big idea and determination, not to mention a group of people energized by the idea of increasing access to fresh food in our area. Combining all of this made for a recipe for success, right from the start. Our community loved the market, and we were proud of what we provided.

Today, our typical market is filled with around six vendors, local organizations providing a tasty supper, coffee trucks, live music, art, and so much more. We admit, our volunteers sweat the small stuff, working hard to bring all of this together — and the more creative we get with Thursdays in Burke, the more people show up to enjoy!

Our passion for sustainable and fair food access fosters small-scale agriculture as a means of economic development in our rural community. We strive to bring the freshest, most nutritious foods to a market where customers see their dollars staying close to home, helping sustain the local economy. It's a place where vendors, old and new, can test out ideas, increase their income, and help sustain their households.

If you haven't joined us yet, we have something truly special awaiting you on Thursdays from July through September at the beautiful Burke City Park. See you soon!

Frequently asked questions

How do I pay for my purchases?

We accept cash, check, and SNAP/EBT payments for all purchases. Most shoppers like our One Stop Payment option, allowing you to make a single cash or check payment for purchases from all vendors by checking in with the Market Manager upon arrival. Vendors will record purchases on your payment slip, which is totaled at the end of your visit. Please note that we are unable to accept credit or debit cards at this time.

Do you accept SNAP benefits?

Yes, we do. Customers may be able to purchase: vegetables, fruit, dairy products, meat, poultry, fish, eggs, bread, cereals, jam, syrup, honey, rice, grains and dried beans, pickles, packaged pastries, cold, wrapped and packaged (to-go) edible items.

How can I be a vendor?

Absolutely! Vendor fees are $7.50 per week for paid market members. Membership fees are $25.00 per season and guarantee you three paid market days. Vendors who do not pay the membership fee in advance will pay a weekly rate of $15.00 per market. Vendors can still receive a discount if they pay for the entire season up front. The total for the 12-market 2025 season is $90.00, minus $22.50 (one free market per month of July, August, and September), for a total advance payment of $67.50.
